i.B.O.M.S. kicks off the New Year with the first installment of his Blue Print Series 1 “Shigarakis Therapy”.
Taking inspiration from Tomura Shigaraki, the main antagonist of “My Hero Academia”, Jabari asks the question, “Who envisions themselves as the villain in the grand scheme?”. A villain is only viewed as such by hero’s and the opposition.
With these prints Jabari seems to be reflecting on his work from the past, even hinting at characters from his own world with the “Ashi” reference in his written piece, a very introspective take from Jabari. The Blue Print minimalist style is a dope contrast from the majority of Jabari’s previous works, that are very colorful.
So far the 5/5 hand embellished prints are already sold out but you can still pick up some of the original prints. Due to the limited run and Series 1 status, I would highly recommend picking up one of these prints before they are all gone.
Not sure if it’s his written takes working as companion pieces to his work, or just how his pieces have been hitting me lately but, i.B.O.M.S. work is connecting with me on an even higher level than before.
iBOMS leaves us all stargazing with his first solo show at Mize Gallery, presenting “Ego Death”.
iBOMS concept for the show was to portray how a psychological death feels. iBOMS created two new characters “Ego” the lighter, earthy mushroom, and his counterpart “Ego Death” the yellow mushroom. Both characters live in this new world iBOMS has created. They act has a vessel for iBOMS to deliver his feelings and message.
Ego seems to be the more down to earth of the two. I think the hoodie makes him feel more human than Ego Death.
The name sake of the entire show, Ego Death is fixture in almost every piece from the show. You can tell he is the more mischievous of the two mushrooms.
Prior to taking his first airplane trip iBOMS decided to create a backpack piece to show off around the airport. Ego Death sure is doing a great drop rocking it as apart of this sculpture piece.
“Delivery To The Ideas” is a look at iBOMS creative process. Again Ego Death makes an appearance in the piece. I really dig when iBOMS uses these older looking frames, it really adds an old world museum quality to them, connect the new with the old.
This piece represents the euphoric high Jabari gets when he eats his favorite candy strawberry starburst. I can totally relate to this piece not necessarily with starburst, but with my own favorite snacks and sodas. That first sip of Cherry Coke hits different.
iBOMS representation of a mortal death, meaning anything of this world has a beginning and an end, which can be good or bad. The character represents iBOMS appearing in pain and defeated. The bumble fees surrounding the figure represent the light that can revive or rebirth the figure. The exit sign seems to be a new signature for iBOMS making an appearance in many of the pieces for the show. This by far is the best piece from the show and my favorite iBOMS piece to date.
“Ultralight Beams” is a very different piece for iBOMS, who very rarely takes a minimalistic approach with his work. This one just fits though, you can either ascend upwards into the light or fall back down into the darkness. Chad Mize said the new owner of the piece is going to hang it on a yellow wall, which is really going to make a statement. The process of Ego Death.
“Stargazing” represents what iBOMS sees when he looks at flowers. To him it’s like looking into a nebula or something intergalactic the way flowers appear and connect us to the universe.
I was completely blown away by the show and all the new pieces iBOMS had for our eyes and mind to devour. This is a contender for art show of the year. I plan on at least heading back to the gallery once every weekend while the show is on display. The show will be on display at Mize Gallery until January 24th, gallery hours are Saturdays 10AM-5PM and Sundays 10AM-2PM.
“The Factory”, St.Pete’s newest art gallery/project had their first look this weekend, allowing the community to see what the various artists, vendors, and performs have been working on for the past few months.
At the entrance and outside portion of the art space various local vendors have small pop ups selling everything from essential oils to an entire honey bee colony. Zhudaru1963 had a booth up selling merch and giving wisdom in between performances from the entire collective, giving Kayo Da Beast, Heyeyella, and Alec Burnright the chance to show some new music.
Once you enter into the stage area, drinks and food from some local trucks are set up. I couldn’t pass up a $3 scoop of vanilla chai ginger gelato from the Studio Gelato cart.
The main warehouse is home to various vendors. From Daddy Kool to wacky coasters, the main warehouse is a a dope space to get your brand or art seen. We might even see a Green Diamond CBD pop up in the future.
The screen printed tees from being made on hand features art work from iBOMS, The Vitale Bro’s. Wish I could have picked up that iBOMS shirt.
As you enter into the main gallery portion of “The Factory”, you are met by the people from “Fairgrounds Project” a 15,000 Sq Ft interactive and immersive art space.
One of the main installations I was looking forward to checking out was from iBOMS. With his upcoming solo installation at MIZE Gallery. iBOMS brought some newer and older pieces allowing some new folks to check out the movement.
It was really dope to see all the love Jabari got selling most of his pieces before I even arrived. The centerpiece of his installation was the candy filled gun chain. In a similar vibe to Kristopher Kites pieces, iBOMS puts his on spin on what art and a chain can be.
Overall I had a great time at “The Factory” first look. Once things fully get rolling I feel this will be a great venue for different artists and performers to showcase their work via pop ups, stage performances, and installations, creating a multimedia experience the burg has never seen.
With his most ambitious project to date under his belt with “Where this Bloom Begins” mural, iBOMS is set to showcase some of his newest pieces with the “Ego Death” installation at Mize Gallery in early January.
Sea Walls X SHINE Mural Festival tasked iBOMS with crafting a mural dealing with the themes of harmful algae blooms and red tide. iBOMS used his Ashi character as the centerpiece. Ashi is depicted floating in a body of red water, surrounded by dead fish and red flowers. The flowers represent the algae spreading toxins into the water, that Ashi is absorbing, causing his tattoos to form. Ashi is transformed from the toxins changing his appearance to reflect the environment he is in. Although he is now toxic, Ashi can change the way the way he presents the toxic side of him to the world.
My favorite thing about iBOMS work is the cartoon world he has created with his Ashi character. For now I know he has created some female characters, one of them named Badi, to live in his old school Disney meets The Boondocks style of artwork.
Other than his newest mural by far my favorite pieces from iBOMS have got to be his mega Draco and mega Mac 11 resin casts of mega blocks. These stand alone pieces are essential for any iBOMS fan, I definitely need one of each in my collection. I am hoping one day iBOMS and Chicago based creative Kristopher Kites can do a collab on a Draco chain.
With an upcoming installation at the debut of St.Petes new “The Factory”, I am looking forward to seeing what new pieces iBOMS has created. This year was about the brand, next year is about expanding. I hope one day he can create the signature Jit Camp jit to be the sites new mascot.
